Eye on Education: Testing and School Quality

Eye on EducationIt’s hard to escape the emphasis on test scores in today’s schools. Parents search for homes in school districts with the highest scores. Teachers are being evaluated – and even fired – based in part on whether their students’ scores increase.  Schools are being labeled as needing improvement under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) because of test scores. And, according to a recent analysis by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, tampering with the testing process in order to raise scores is suspected in close to 200 school districts across the country. Students In CarIn one of our weekly polls we learned that most students do not bring a car to college. This is most likely due to the fact that most college towns are equipped to make student living convenient.

However, every now and then, it’s necessary for a student to have access to a car. Enter the Zipcar – the increasingly popular car sharing program that is popping up on campuses all over the country. It is aimed towards younger drivers who normally aren’t old enough to rent a car in many states.
