Job Search Tip: Attend A Conference

Opportunities to meet new people and expand your network are  everywhere. Attend a conference in your area of interest.

Professional conferences give you a leg up in your employment-search for many reasons. You can:
- Learn topical information. This adds value to you as a potential employee.
- Explore new potential industries. Not sure what area of study to pursue? Learn from those who know and love what they do.
- Make direct connections with people who are hiring – or know those who are hiring – in your industry.

To find local conferences, do an internet search for professional organizations in your geographical area. Also, check the places in your town that hold events.

Hint: If money is tight, volunteer to help out at the conference. You can work check-in, direct attendees and/or host the speakers. Think of it as bonus access to the leaders in your industry.

Poll Results: Finding A Job

Last week, we asked The Explorer readers: “How did you get your job?” Nearly  half – 43% – responded that they got their job through a referral. The second most popular response was “a job website” at 29%.

If you want to take the best of both worlds, here’s a suggestion: Do your job search online and then see who in your network of family and friends knows someone in that company. Your resume is much more likely to get noticed, when you start with a personal introduction and recommendation.

Note: Those who are currently employed, be careful who you ask and how much you send the message out to the universe that you are looking for a job. You do not want to find yourself suddenly unemployed.

On Friday, networking expert Anne Hilbert suggested conversation starters to use when asking for a referral. Read her post.
