When you go into a school to observe, visit, or student teach – dress like a teacher, not a college student. There’s a big difference.
Masters programs in the field of education vary in length, certification, cost and emphasis. But while a student at Arizona State getting a Masters of Education (M.Ed.) in administration and supervision might have a few different classes from a student in Temple University’s Educational Psychology program, they are both going to need baseline coursework in curriculum, instruction, technology and special education.
Charlain Bailey is school counselor at at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. She has a bachelor of science in art education from Louisiana State University and a masters of education in school counseling from Bowie State University in Maryland.

The best undergraduate teaching and secondary education programs seek to produce educators and educational researchers who want to have a positive impact on future students and the surrounding communities. In other words, the best programs produce the best teachers. And in turn, those teachers go on to have an extraordinary impact on the students they teach.
The following universities boast award-winning education departments that are nationally-known for producing excellent educational researchers and top-notch teachers.
All education majors can expect to encounter a certain set of courses as they proceed through their college studies. While the general structure of an education schedule is somewhat constant, there are unique differences depending on the student’s employment goals.
The following are two different education major sample schedules:
– An elementary education major at a private, liberal arts college.
– A secondary education major at a public, big ten university, with a specialty in biology.
Notice how both schedules are back-loaded with education courses, with the first few semesters dedicated to general education and background courses.
Eric Sheninger is the principal at New Milford High School in Bergen County, New Jersey. He has a masters in educational administration from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.
Sheninger – who speaks nationally to assist other school leaders embrace and effectively utilize technology – shares his experience, along with advice for potential and current students who have an interest in studying education.
