Focus on Computer Science: Advice for Students

To wrap up this month’s Focus on Majors we invited computer science graduates to share their advice for students who are considering a career in computer science.

Christine Silvers, chief medical officer, AFrame Digital, Inc., who received her bachelors, masters and Ph.D, in computer science from MIT, as well as a medical degree from Harvard.

Keep an open mind about your classes, interests and potential major; choose your major based upon what you love to do and not what you think others expect you to do; and consider finding your career niche at the intersection of your greatest interests.

As part of our Focus on Business series, The Explorer Blog speaks with Chris and Natasha Ashton, founders and CEOs of Petplan Insurance. The inspiration for Petplan came from a $5,000 veterinary bill the Ashtons incurred for their cat “Bodey” while they were pursuing their MBAs at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. Winning the Wharton School Business Plan Competition with the idea for Petplan, the Ashtons have built a business that now insures 100,000 dogs and cats across the country.

In our most recent poll, we asked our readers what they felt was the highest paying emphasis for a business major. The number one choice was entrepreneurship with 42%. Following way behind was sales (13%), finance and management (10%) and general business (3%).

I worked on Wall Street right out of college then spent many years in corporate America at P&G and Coca-Cola, did a stint at the Dept of Treasury in DC, ran marketing at three successful start-up companies and then started my own firm ten years ago.
