Ask the Guest Expert: “Is There Still Time to Send in my College Applications?”

Asian Female Student ThinkingApplication deadlines are approaching. Guest expert Dr. Allison Deegan, associate director of Los-Angeles based mentoring organization WriteGirl, offers some last-minute application insights and advice.

Question: “Is there still time to send in my college applications?”

Answer: Yes. It’s not too late! Most private schools have application deadlines of December 31, 2011, or January 1, 2012. Some public schools may also have later application dates for certain campuses.

I’ve heard many students say that they waited too long and don’t have enough time to complete and submit an application good enough for a chance at admission. Their attitude is “Why bother?” One significant reason to bother is that any application submitted has a chance, and an application not submitted is a guaranteed “no.”

Rock Your College Interview

Professional Male StudentVisiting colleges is a major part of the college-search process. If you are planning to visit a school – especially if it’s one of your top college choices – try to set up a college interview prior to your visit. Meeting with an admissions officer or official from the university is an excellent way to increase your chances of being accepted.

A face-to-face discussion gives you the opportunity to show a bit of your personality … and to explain any academic shortcomings that might be on your transcript. It’s another chance for you to show the school how much you want to attend and how they might benefit from having you as a student there.

SAT WeekQuestion: “Is there a way to increase my SAT Score?””

Answer: Yes, there is. Did you know that the writing multiple choice section is the part of the test you can control the most? Most students approach the SAT from a position of fear rather than one of mastery. Mastery is possible! Once you understand what tricks College Board test writers have up their sleeve, you should be able to anticipate the answer before even looking at the choices.
