Eye on Education: Testing and School Quality

Eye on EducationIt’s hard to escape the emphasis on test scores in today’s schools. Parents search for homes in school districts with the highest scores. Teachers are being evaluated – and even fired – based in part on whether their students’ scores increase.  Schools are being labeled as needing improvement under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) because of test scores. And, according to a recent analysis by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, tampering with the testing process in order to raise scores is suspected in close to 200 school districts across the country. Report: Qualified Students Missing Out on AP Opportunities

Advance Placement StudentAdvance Placement (AP) courses give teens an excellent opportunity to prepare for college-level classes while they are still in high school. The exams, taken at the end of those courses, can earn students college credit – this gives them a head-start as they work towards their degree. It also helps make a student look more appealing to colleges, when they have excelled in an AP course.

According to an annual report by College Board, a large number of students – who could have performed well on advance placement exams – missed out on the opportunity to do so. Continue reading

Spotted: Students React to SOPA-related Blackout

Frustrated Girl at ComputerUnless you happen to live in a cave without wi-fi access (no excuses for you, Batman…), then you are aware that earlier this week a number of popular websites opted to black out to protest – and make users aware of – the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

The websites involved, including Wikipedia and reddit, rely on user-uploaded content and would be incredibly affected by the bill which aims to crack down on illegal use of copyrighted material.  Students rely on a number of these popular websites, as sources of information for papers, homework and to study for tests.
