Classes that Prepare a Healthcare Major

It’s tough to know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life while still in high school. If you are someone who enjoys helping and caring for other people, then a career in healthcare might be the right path.

Here are some classes you can take before you get to college to help prepare you for a healthcare career.

Sciences
If you think you might be heading towards a career in healthcare, then you should make it a priority to take as many different science classes as possible. Try to get at least one of the major sciences – biology, chemistry, physics and anatomy – on your schedule each year of high school. You will appreciate having a solid background in each of these courses once you find yourself pursuing a healthcare degree.

Math
Just like with science, a healthcare major should have a well-rounded education in mathematics. The more you can cover during your high school years, the more prepared you will be for your curriculum as a healthcare major. A solid understanding of algebra is necessary for many college entrance exams, as well as most basic health care occupations. A lot of pre-med students will have to take courses such as remedial trigonometry, so it’s best to be prepared even if you are unsure of your career goals.

Foreign Language
Do you plan on working in a hospital or medical office? Then you will encounter and assist people from all different backgrounds. Learning a foreign language will help you substantially in the long run. It will also make you more appealing as a potential employee – doctors who are not bilingual will need the assistance.

Computer
Computer skills are essential for just about every career these days. This is certainly the case for any type of assistant position in healthcare. If you work in a medical office, it will be your responsibility to keep track of medical records for each patient and manage appointments for the office. You should be well versed in basic computer organizational skills.
