For this edition of Spotted on Campus, we are sharing some popular high school movies and the campuses where they were filmed.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a high-school classic that focuses on a high school senior’s last hoorah before graduation. Ferris is really only on campus at one point in the film – though much of the movie takes place at his high school. The exterior school scenes were filmed at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois, and many of the students at the school served as extras. Most of the school’s interior shots, though, were filmed at Maine North High School – which also served as the location for another John Hughes’s film: The Breakfast Club.
Pretty in Pink. Pretty in Pink – also by John Hughes – was filmed at Burroughs Junior High in Hancock Park. The film, which stars Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer and James Spader also included some filming at Marshall High School – one of the schools where Grease was filmed in 1978.
Clueless. Clueless was one of the most popular high school movies of the 1990s. The film – about a well-meaning, superficial teen, played by Alicia Silverstone – had many scenes depicting the high school experience. The tennis courts, the outdoor cafeteria, the quad and various classroom shots were filmed at Occidental College in Los Angeles.
Mean Girls. Back when Lindsay Lohan’s star was rising, she starred with Rachel McAdams in this hit high school comedy, written by Tina Fey. Mean Girls – as the title suggests – portrays high school cliques in an extreme, though slightly realistic, manner. Most of the interior school scenes were shot at Montclair High School in New Jersey. The more recognizable exterior shots were filmed at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute in Toronto.
Varsity Blues. This drama about the pressures of being on a high school football team in Texas starred Dawson Creek’s James Van Der Beek and was actually shot on location in the Lone Star State. Nighttime filming for the exciting football sequences were shot in a high school stadium in Elgin, Texas, as well as at an 8,500 seat stadium in Georgetown, Texas.
